Dolmens are believed to be the inner structure of tumuli - neolithic burial sites, covered by earth mounds. However there are those who believe that not all dolmen megaliths were so covered.

Sizes range from tiny - such as that at Grealou (approx 1m) to huge such as Le Grand Dolmen de Bagneaux (23m long) - one of the largest in Europe.
