The Jesus Mysteries
Was The Original Jesus A Pagan God?

Timothy Freke, Peter Gandy

Believing Christians will find The Jesus Mysteries too disturbing, so this controversial thesis will be dismissed by many.

Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy demonstrate that Christian belief, practice and dogma is based on Pagan traditions.

Even though Christianity developed from Judaism it's beliefs concerning heaven, hell and purgatory owe more to Paganism than they do to Judaism.

Consider these similarities:

Virgin births were common in pre-Christian religions
Bapptism
Communion
The resurrecting god/man
December 25th was the birthday of Mithras
Pagan gods turned water into wine
Pagan gods stilled stormy waters
Pagan gods healed the sick
Pagan gods raised the dead
Teachings concerning morality, humility, love and poverty

Freke and Gandy conclude that Christianity religion was developed for the Jewish people as an alternative variant of Paganism.

Jesus was considered as a variant of Mithras/Osiris/Dionysius.

The story of Dionysus resembles the story of Jesus Christ as follows:

Dionysus was a man/God made flesh
Dionysus was considered to be the "saviour"
Dionysus was considered to be the"son of God"
Dionysus' father was God
Dionysus' mother was a mortal virgin
Dionysus' mother was later worshipped as "mother of God"
Dionysus was born in a cowshed
Dionysus expelled demons
Dionysus turned water into wine
Dionysus raised the dead
Dionysus rode in in triumph as palms were waved to honour him
Dionysus' birth date was the date which the earliest Christians revered as Jesus' birthday
Dionysus' three day Spring Festival celebrated his death
Dionysus rites celebrated the Last Supper and Eucharist

...the parallels with pagan and 'mystery' religions are striking.

All-in-all this book provides compelling detail concerning the origins of Christianity, with copious footnotes to enable us to take the subject seriously.
